3 Minute Thesis” Competition – University of Lisbon: Applications open until February 16
In 2025, the University of Lisbon is promoting the third edition of the 3MT competition, challenging its PhD students to explain the impact of their research to a non-specialist audience, in just three minutes and using a single slide.
By organizing the 3 Minute Thesis (3MT) competition, the University of Lisbon aims to stimulate the science communication skills of PhD students. Considering that the knowledge produced in universities is essential to solving major societal challenges, promoting dialogue between science and society is a particularly important step in the process of training PhD students.
In this competition, students are challenged to explain the importance and impact of their research to a non-specialized audience, while promoting scientific culture and fostering interdisciplinarity and mutual knowledge at the University of Lisbon.
The 3MT academic competition at the University of Lisbon aims to develop PhD students’ unique skills, such as communicating complex ideas simply and creatively to diverse audiences in just 3 minutes. The competition is inspired by a format developed and patented by the University of Queensland, Australia (3MT®), on which ULisboa developed its first edition in 2023, rewarding 3 students, and the second edition in 2024, also rewarding 3 PhD students.
